THE SELF PORTRAIT:
HAZARDOUS FORMS, CINEMA-TESTS and NEW NARRATIVES
This mini-workshop aims to make a historical review of the film-essay, taking as an example some relevant cases of this hybrid form of documentary (between documentary and avant-garde) where what prevails is the subjectivity of the author and the use of various materials, as well as reflective activity as an action against these times of accumulation of images.
We will also approach three recent works of our own production: "Color dog that flees" (2011), "Final test for utopia" (2012) and "First Symptoms" (2015).
It is indispensable for those who see the cinema-essay closer to experimental cinema than to documentary, and consider that the film-essay that proliferates in this postmodern era of confusion of borders, modes and discourses is the result of the same hybridization and perhaps its highest expression, a whole horizon for the audiovisual of the nineteenth century.
